The Food and Drugs Authority of Ghana is warning people against using KANGEN water, which is claimed to be 100% alkaline and has not been approved for medical purposes by the authority. Even though the manufacturer has obtained an FDA registration number for producing drinking water, it has misused the number by labeling its 100% alkaline water with it.
The manufacturer asserts that the 100% alkaline water possesses medicinal and therapeutic qualities. However, the FDA disputes this claim, stating that it lacks scientific validation and that its efficacy cannot be guaranteed.
Under section 100(1) of the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851), it is illegal to advertise food as a preventative or cure for any ailment, disorder, or abnormal physical state. Additionally, Act 851 prohibits the advertisement of treatments for conditions such as hypertension, cancer, and diabetes.
As a result, the FDA has suspended the production of these goods and has asked the manufacturer to withdraw them from circulation pending further investigations.
