The Nkwanta District court has handed down a 12-month prison sentence with hard labor to Anyebas James, a 23-year-old Level 200 student at the University of Development Studies (UDS). This sentence comes in response to James' fraudulent activities, where he deceived a businessman in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
James openly admitted his guilt, leading to his conviction in court. Police Inspector Bright Nana Nkansah presented the case before the court, which was presided over by Mr. Joseph Evans Anang Okrupa. According to the prosecution's account, the incident occurred on July 10 of this year when James advertised a Haojue DR motorbike for sale on his WhatsApp status and Facebook profile.
Mr. S.K. Kwasi, the victim in this case, expressed interest in purchasing the motorbike and subsequently contacted James. They engaged in negotiations and settled on a price of GHC8,500. To facilitate the motorbike's transfer, James instructed Mr. Kwasi to transfer the money to his mobile money (Momo) account, a request that Mr. Kwasi complied with.
However, after receiving the full payment, James demanded an additional GH¢1,100 for motorbike registration, increasing the total to GH¢9,600. Regrettably, James failed to fulfill his part of the agreement and went into hiding in Nalerigu, despite numerous attempts by Mr. Kwasi to reach him.
Frustrated and left with no other recourse, Mr. Kwasi reported the case to the Nkwanta Police station, ultimately leading to James' arrest at his hideout after a thorough investigation.
In court, James was found guilty, and as a gesture of goodwill, his family contributed GH¢4,000 to partially repay the money he had unlawfully obtained. This sum was presented to the court. Nevertheless, as a deterrent to both James and others who may contemplate engaging in fraudulent activities, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison with hard labor.
